Tesuque Pottery

Early Tesuque pottery is difficult to find and is often quite valuable. Tesuque Pueblo pottery is often associated with small tourist wares and Rain God figures, many of which were brightly painted in poster paint. But prior to this tourist trade (which started in the late-1880s), Tesuque potters created large jars, ollas, and bowls for home use - often decorated with ornate black painted designs on a red or cream slip. To achieve these intricate black designs, Tesuque potters used paint made from the wild spinach plant, which is clear when painted on but turns dark black during the firing process.
